What Is A Computer Mouse

Published by adimoga, on May 21st, 2010, in the categories: news

I have heard some people asking the question “what is a computer mouse?” and to tell you the truth I was quite shocked. I was shocked because the computer mouse has an immense importance when it comes to the utility of the computer. The computer mouse is a pointing device that is able to detect a two-dimensional motion relative to its supporting surface. The mouse is an object which the user holds under his/her hand and which has at least two buttons and in the more recent cases a wheel. The name was invented by the Stanford Research Institute and it derives from the resemblance between the item and the mouse.

There are various types of computer mice but each of them has the same purpose and it is capable of performing the same tasks. The initial mice were the mechanical mice or the rubber ball mice. This type of computer mice is no longer used because it is very problematic and it is not too reliable. The mechanical mouse has a wheel underneath it and when the ball was moved the data was transmitted to the computer and that made the cursor to move on the monitor. As I said, these computer mice are no longer used and there are several valid reasons for this. First of all, since the mechanical mouse used a ball which would usually collect lots of filth and dust and because of that they did not function properly.

The next type of computer mice was the optical mouse which was different than the mechanical one from various points of view. First of all, the optical mouse did not have a rubber ball but an LED light which detected movement. The detection of the movement resulted in a movement of the cursor. The optical mouse brought different benefits when compared to the mechanical one, one of the most important being that it was far more accurate and had a better response time. The LED mouse could not be used on certain surfaces but that problem could be easily solved by using a certain type of mouse pad. The next type of computer mice is the laser mouse.

This type of mouse is very similar to the optical one, the only difference being the fact that instead of an LED light, it uses a laser which brings various benefits. One of the benefits of using a laser mouse instead of an optical one is the fact that the laser mouse is more responsive and that it can detect even the slightest movement. A more recent type of mouse appeared as well and it is the trackball mouse. It has a ball on top of the mouse which can be used in order to move the cursor. This was my answer to the question "what is a computer mouse?"

A press on the buttons being found on the mouse will result in a click which will represents a certain command give by the user who might be guiding the pointing device.

In what concerns the brain of the computer mouse it can be mentioned that every mouse presents its own brain which in fact represents a software type of driver which enables it to function and without which the computer mouse would not actually respond in any way. The driver is very important as it enables the computer to actually understand what it is supposed to do according to the command having been given by the users with the help of the mouse. There are various types of such drivers, some being simpler or more complex. The more complex ones are known to give users the opportunity to assign all sorts of specific actions to the buttons being placed on the body of the computer mouse and even to make all sorts of adjustments to the mouse resolution for example.

When discussing about computer mouse devices and their features it might also be very interesting and useful to be mentioned the fact that there are also used all sorts of raw materials in the manufacture of these devices. Such materials are the ABS type of plastic used for the outer shell of the computer mouse and the metals used in the manufacture of the computer mouse ball. Certainly, these are just two important raw materials used in the manufacture of such devices as they might also be considered other such examples of materials according to various types and models of computer mouse devices found available to be analyzed, bought and used by us nowadays.

Computers are important for all of us as we all need to use them in many situations in which they can be very useful for us to work with. We all want to be able to benefit as much as possible from using them and in order to make this possible it is important for us to be learn how to work properly with such devices. They can be very useful for us to use but we just have to learn how to improve their functions and how to work with them so that we might benefit more from using them in all sorts of activities in which we might involve their use. And in order to learn about our computers and their functions it is important for us to carefully analyze each of its components and to become familiar with all sorts of changes and improvements being made to them so that we might make use of them as well in order to improve the functions of our own computers.

The mouse is an important computer hardware component. We all use it while working with our computer and in this ways it is important for us to be aware of as many aspects related to it as possible for a better understanding of the way in which it functions and of the way in which it can prove to be useful for us to use. There are numerous aspects related to the hardware components included in our computer or connected to it that we can easily find nowadays and become aware of. In this respect, many computer users might also be interested in finding out about who invented the first computer mouse and certainly some aspects related to how the first computer mouse functioned.

The answer for the question of who invented the first computer mouse is Douglas Engelbart. He created the first mouse prototype in 1963. He was assisted in his invention by Bill English, a colleague of his at the Stanford Research Institute. Bill English invented later on, in 1972, the ball type of mouse which was included within the hardware part of the Xerox Alto PC available at that time.

When discussing about who invented the first computer mouse it is also important to consider some aspects related to the way in which this first mouse looked like and to the ways in which it functioned. In this respect, it can be mentioned the fact that it was perceived as a bulky type of device and that it functioned by using two gear-wheels positioned perpendicularly to one another. The way in which the mouse could enable movement was by moving each of these two wheels who were placed on an axis.

There are numerous interesting aspects which we can learn about all sorts of computer hardware components nowadays and the answer for the question of who invented the first computer mouse might also be interesting to be made aware to many of those who are not already familiar to it. In time, the mouse that has been firstly invented has been changed in many ways as various technologies have appeared and in this way, nowadays we all use different types and models of such devices according to our choice.

Wired Ergonomic Mouse

Published by MouseArena, on March 12th, 2010, in the categories: Ergonomic mouse, Reviews, news

When people hear about wired ergonomic computer mice they immediately think about Evolute or another very famous and popular computer mouse that has ended up appearing in all computer magazines and on all web pages. That is exactly why I will talk about the Sky Vertical ergonomic mouse today. This one is indeed a wired ergonomic mouse and also a vertical mouse.

Sky vertical mouse is one of those ergonomic devices that uses the vertical position of the hand in order to offer it a more ergonomic support. In fact this mouse is not that radical and the hand has a combination between the vertical and the horizontal position  during mousing. As you probably know many specialists consider that most of the repetitive strain injuries are caused by the horizontal position of the hand while using the computer mouse.

So apparently the "palm down" position leads to pressure in the wrist , affecting the blood vessels and the tendons there and also forces the bones in the forearm to stay twisted during the long hours of mousing, which can cause a lot of pain. That is why the vertical position of the hand is considered more appropriate and more ergonomic, as the hand bones are no longer twisted and the hand rests in a neutral and more comfortable position. It can even relax in between the mousing sessions. So this Sky vertical ergonomic mouse is one of these devices that applied this ergonomic theory into practice.

This wired ergonomic mouse seems to be the only one without a pre-established positioning of the thumb. It does not have any carving where you should place your thumb, but gives you the freedom to place it where it feels comfortable. There are , however, two specially designed scoops where your fingers are supposed to rest (I mean the index and the middle finger, as they are the ones operating the two mouse buttons). The mouse has the classical two buttons for left and right click and also the so necessary scroll wheel. It is simply designed and has few buttons because its purpose is not gaming, but ensuring the best comfort for the hand.

It is also a bit taller higher than other computer mice, as its purpose is to lift the wrist from the table or desk in order to avoid putting pressure on it. This mouse is also a bit bigger than most of the mice we got used to because it follows the size of te human hand, which is not that small and when the hand is bigger than the mouse , it usually rests the rist on the desk, which is not good.

But besides the ergonomic features, this Sky vertical ergonomic mouse has other qualities, too. It is a wired computer mouse, so it works as soon as you plug it into the USB or PS2 port of your computer. It will work immediately, as it does not need any software to be installed. It has 800 dpi resolution and is available only in black and silver design. The surface of the mouse has a very comfortable texture and the whole mouse design follows the contour of the hand, so it will need only a slight movement of the hand to be operated, in spite of its dimensions. It is actually pretty light, too. Like all ergonomic computer mice, it comes for a pretty high price of $99.
