Wireless computer mice use a transmitter and a receiver in order to be able to communicate from the distance (even if in this case the distance is very short – only a few metres). The mouse transmits the data through infrared radiation or radio frequency signals.

That is why they need batteries –most often two AA batteries, but there are some that can work with only one.
