The computer mouse is one of the most important computer accessories because they facilitate the process of using the computer very much. The main difference between the computer mouse devices is the way in which they collect and send the data to the computer in order to make the cursor move. There are four categories of computer mouse devices: mechanical, optical, laser, and trackball.



All of these categories have the same task but each category has its pros and cons. The mechanical mouse was the original type of computer mouse but since it was problematic it is no longer used. The technology has evolved a lot and because of that they have been discontinued. The method of sending data to the computer was accomplished when a rubber ball underneath the mouse moved. The cursor moved in the same manner as the rubber ball. The problem with these computer mouse devices is the fact that they used to collect lots of dirt which resulted in a decrease of accuracy.



The next types of computer mouse devices are the optical ones. They are still used because they are much more accurate than the mechanical computer mouse devices. The optical mouse uses an LED light instead of the rubber ball which was used in the case of the mechanical mouse. Because of this, the LED mouse is much more accurate, but the problem is that they can not be used on certain surfaces, and they can be used only on certain computer mouse pads. The next category of computer mouse devices is the laser mouse which are similar to the optical ones, the difference being that the laser mouse uses a laser instead of an LED light for navigation.



Because of this the laser mouse is much more accurate than the optical mouse and it has very fast response times. These mouse devices can be used in gaming where an accurate and very responsive mouse is needed. The last category of computer mouse is the trackball. The trackball has been recently introduced and it uses a very innovative concept. The trackball has a big ball on top of the mouse which is used in order to move the cursor. Think of it as a trackpad which you can find on the portable computers only that instead of a flat surface you will have to move a spherical object. The trackball is great because it does not require too much space on the desk, but it can not be used for tasks such as gaming, for the obvious reasons. These are the main computer mouse devices.
