The computer mouse pad first appeared in 1968 which was approximately the time when the mouse was first introduced as well. Douglas Engelbart was the first one which introduced this mouse in a presentation which took place in the same year. As you can imagine, the original mouse pad looked nothing like the ones we used today because during that time the mouse pad was more of a slot in which you placed the mouse. This was the prototype for the mouse pad and in the following year the first official mouse pad was designed. By 1982 most of the people who had access to a computer used the mouse pad in order to increase the friction and the efficiency of the mouse.

The term was even introduced in the Oxford English Dictionary on the 25 August, 1983, and the term mousemat was introduced on 17 October, 1989. There are various benefits when using the mouse pad. The first one is that you can use the mouse with a higher speed and that is very useful especially for the people who work in a domain which has to do with computers. The second benefit when using a mouse pad is the fact that the mouse has a higher precision which is once again very useful. The third benefit of using the mouse pad is the fact that the comfort of the person who uses the mouse pad is increased.

The mouse pad also prevented the desk or the surface on which the mouse was placed on from being scratched. The mouse pad evolved together with the evolution of the gaming mice. For example the optical mice required a different type of mouse pad which would have optical patterns in order to function properly. There are various types of mouse pads, ranging from various points of view such as size, material, and so on. Most of the mouse pads are made out of neoprene which seems to be the mot suitable material but they can also be made out of plastic and so on.
